East Rockingham Senior Center: ERSC Local Council Member Introduces Painting
Wilma Bain (standing in photo), who is a member of the ERSC Local Council and regular Center volunteer, came armed with paints, paper and samples of her work to inspire others to join her in expressing their creative talents.
Wilma had discussed the possibilities of doing this for many months, and on February 22, she arrived at the Center with arm loads of supplies, including watercolor and acrylic paints, brushes and paper, as well as some of her own works of art, which we all found very impressive!
Wilma had expressed her desire to motivate a few of the Center members, who typically don’t walk the track, play dominoes, or engage in some of the other activities offered on varying occasions, and it was an opportune time as our scheduled craft activity through the Rockingham County Recreation Department was postponed for the day due to the leader’s illness.
As Wilma chose to bring the activity ‘to the people’ it didn’t take long for others to join in the fun. While folks marveled over Wilma’s framed and unframed watercolor pieces, with a short bit of instruction and guidance from her, several of our members and JMU nursing students had a watercolor art piece of their own to take home today. We hope this will be the start of a fun activity that will continue. We have appreciated Wilma’s service to our Center as a volunteer and Local Council member, and the fact that she is willing to share and teach us in such a creative way is commendable.
Timberville-Broadway Senior Center: TBSC and JMU Students Play Food Plate Bingo
A new group of James Madison University nursing students joined TBSC members on Wednesday February 22 and will be with us on Wednesdays for the next three weeks.
The students led TBSC members in playing a new Food Plate Bingo Game. The game introduced several new foods and led to some interesting discussion about nutrition and portion sizes.
Prizes included granola bars, fruit, and cheese.

Staunton Senior Center: Local Author Presented VMI History
Colonel Keith Gibson, Executive Director of VMI Museum Programs, paid SSC a visit for its latest in the Local Author Series.
His Power Point presentation was both interesting and informative, as he zeroed in on portions of old photographs and explored some of the minute details with us. His presentation chronicled the history of VMI as he brought out even the humorous and lighter aspects of the institution as well as some of his own personal experiences there as a cadet.
During the process of writing the book, Colonel Gibson viewed over 10,000 old photographs, finally narrowing this down to 200 pictures that he captured in his book entitled Virginia Military Institute. The author graciously gave a copy of his work to the Center for its members to add to the library. SSC Program Director Lori Pullin perused the book the evening of Colonel Gibson’s visit and thoroughly enjoyed its content, both the pictures and the wonderful written material included!
Stay tuned for further announcements concerning our next local author who has been invited to the Center in March!
Staunton Senior Center: 65 Seniors Convened at Y On Valentine’s Day
The Staunton-Augusta YMCA invited SSC for a potluck luncheon on Valentine’s Day.
One of their instructors, Carol Byrd, who leads exercise on Thursdays at the Center, invited SSC members to join the seniors who exercise at the Y for the holiday festivities. Thankfully, there was an overabundance of wonderfully delicious food to satisfy the appetites of approximately 65 seniors and the many staff members working the event!
Before the luncheon got underway, Carol led an interesting time of Valentine multiple choice trivia questions and also trivia concerning the Y and its recent renovations. The eldest senior was given a prize, and that would be our own Mary, who recently turned 92! While seniors and staff enjoyed the wide array of foods, High on the Mountain Boys entertained with their country bluegrass music.
What a special way to spend a Valentine’s Day, in the company of old and new friends!
